We are excited to share that we have introduced a new MediWorks Fundus Camera to our practice. This advanced imaging technology enhances the way we examine and monitor the health of your eyes — making your comprehensive eye test even more thorough and informative.
What Is a Fundus Camera?
A fundus camera is a specialised medical imaging device that takes detailed, high-resolution photographs of the back of the eye — also known as the fundus. This includes the:
- Retina
- Optic nerve
- Macula
- Retinal blood vessels
These structures are vital for clear vision and overall eye health. By capturing detailed images, a fundus camera allows us to carefully assess these areas and monitor any changes over time.
Why Is This Important for You?
Many eye conditions develop gradually and may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Fundus photography allows us to:

Your eyes can reveal important information about your overall health. Fundus imaging plays a crucial role in monitoring patients with:
Diabetes
Diabetes can lead to diabetic retinopathy, a condition that affects the retinal blood vessels and may cause vision loss if not detected early. Regular retinal imaging is strongly recommended for individuals living with diabetes.
Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
High blood pressure can cause changes to the retinal blood vessels. These changes may reflect how well blood pressure is being controlled.
Glaucoma
Imaging of the optic nerve helps us monitor for structural changes associated with glaucoma.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
The macula is responsible for sharp central vision. Fundus imaging allows us to detect early signs of macular degeneration and track progression over time.
Early detection is key in all of these conditions — and fundus photography is an important part of that process.
What to Expect During the Screening
The process is quick, painless, and non-invasive. You simply look into the camera while an image is taken. In most cases, dilation drops are not required, although we will advise you if they are necessary for optimal imaging.
